Relocating to Kalamazoo Michigan: How Two Teachers Found Home in Portage

Two teachers were relocating from Colorado to start new jobs in Kalamazoo. They needed more than help finding a house. They also needed to learn the area and settle in before school started.

At first, they pictured themselves in a historic Kalamazoo home. Instead, they found the right fit in Portage.

Their new home is a well-kept 1957 bi-level in Shannondale Acres. It is smaller than homes they owned in the past. However, it fits the simpler life they now want.

The buyers

The buyers stayed with family in Lansing while looking for a home. That meant driving to Kalamazoo for each round of showings.

Their new teaching jobs also created a firm deadline. Training started the same week as closing. School began the following Monday.

We needed to make every trip count.

What they wanted at first

Kalamazoo’s historic homes first caught their attention. They loved the architecture, character and walkable locations.

Their budget reached into the mid-$300,000s. Yet many of the homes we toured did not offer the condition they wanted.

We could have continued waiting for the perfect historic home. Instead, we expanded the search into Portage.

That decision gave them more choices while keeping them close to Kalamazoo.

More than 20 homes in two weekends

We packed their search into two busy weekends. Each weekend included 11 or 12 homes.

I organized the appointments and built a practical route. Keeping that many showings on schedule took planning. Still, we had fun along the way.

Touring several homes at once also helped the buyers compare their options. With each showing, they gained a clearer idea of what truly mattered.

During the second weekend, we visited a home in Shannondale Acres. The neighborhood sits near Oakland Drive and West Milham Avenue in Portage.

As soon as they walked inside, both buyers lit up. I could see them realizing that this was the one.

A smaller home with the right features

The 1957 bi-level offered less square footage than their previous homes. Surprisingly, the smaller size felt freeing instead of limiting.

The buyers realized how much simpler their lives had become. They no longer needed a large house filled with belongings.

This home also gave them two features they had always wanted: a working fireplace and a two-car garage. For the first time, both vehicles would fit inside.

After living in larger cities, they also liked the convenience of the Kalamazoo and Portage area. Getting from one side of town to another felt easy and manageable.

A strong offer with added protection

No other buyers competed for the home. My clients offered the full asking price.

Because the air-conditioning system was older, we asked the seller to provide an extended home warranty. The seller agreed.

Next, I connected the buyers with a trusted local inspector. The home performed very well during the inspection. In fact, the inspector praised its quality and overall condition.

The inspection revealed only a few minor concerns. I then provided contractor contacts who could handle the needed repairs.

The appraisal and financing moved forward without problems.  Working with an experienced local lender really made the difference here.

Working through the timing

The seller needed extra time to move out. As a result, the pushed out closing out a week longer than the buyer really wanted.

That timing added some stress. Their teacher training had already started, and the first day of school was approaching.

The buyers created a smart backup plan. They booked an Airbnb in Kalamazoo so they could attend training without driving back and forth from Lansing.

It was a tight timeline, but they made it work.

A meaningful final walk-through

During our final walk-through, the buyers talked about how much fun they had during the process.

They also shared an important realization. They did not need as much space or as many possessions as they once thought.

Now they can choose each item for their smaller home with purpose. Instead of filling rooms, they can create a home that reflects the life they want today.

They have also enjoyed exploring Kalamazoo. Bell’s Eccentric Café has already become one of their favorite local places.

The outcome

By staying open to a new location and a different style of home, these buyers found:

  • A well-maintained Portage home
  • An established neighborhood near Kalamazoo
  • A working fireplace and two-car garage
  • A home that performed well during inspection
  • A smaller space that supports a simpler lifestyle
  • A place to begin their new careers as Kalamazoo teachers

Sometimes buyers do not end up with the home they first imagined. They find something that fits even better.

That is exactly what happened here.
